We have been researching cancer as a medical condition, with legacy medical methodology. With the onset of precision genomics, the treatment of cancer is becoming more of a bio-engineering and data engineering problem.

Weill family commits $100 million for West Coast cancer hub

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Stanford Medicine have announced a $100 million matching grant from the Weill Family Foundation to bring together two leading cancer centers to launch the Weill Cancer Hub West. The new hub will combine the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Stanford Cancer Institute. The two cancer centers have each committed to raising $50 million in matching gifts, bringing total support to $200 million over 10 years.

Weill Cancer Hub West will work to inspire additional philanthropic support and competitive grant funding, generate new patents and intellectual property that supports the universities’ research enterprises, and launch companies that help bring those advances to market.

The hub aims to forge partnerships and break down silos, while establishing a sustainable model of collaborative research between the two institutions.
